Like an oasis in the desert, the country house Monte da Estrela is situated in the remote hinterland of the Alentejo region. About 40 kilometers from the mountain village of Monsaraz, hostess Brites and her family have created a peaceful retreat surrounded by olive groves, which they share with their guests.
From the hotel rooms to the fireplace lounge to the outdoor dining area, every space is furnished with great style. As a welcome snack, there’s a bowl of apricots freshly picked from the tree next to the pool. A few steps away, signs guide you to the most beautiful spot for watching the sunset.
Upon my arrival, I first settle into a hanging chair on the terrace with a glass of rosé, cuddling the puppies that are hopping around before the cook whips up a sensational three-course vegetarian dinner. It’s my idea of paradise!
